WNBA 2025 Season: Team Grades and Surprises One Month In

Early Standouts and Struggles in the 2025 WNBA Season

The 2025 WNBA season, now in its 29th year, has reached the one-month mark since tipping off on May 16. With 13 teams in the league, including the newly added Golden State Valkyries, the competition has been fierce. According to a detailed evaluation by ESPN, teams like the New York Liberty and Minnesota Lynx have emerged as early frontrunners, both earning 'A' grades for their consistent performance and strong rosters.

Other teams have also exceeded expectations. The Phoenix Mercury secured an 'A-' grade, showcasing a balanced attack and solid defense. Meanwhile, the Atlanta Dream and Seattle Storm both received 'B+' grades, reflecting their ability to compete with top-tier teams despite some inconsistencies. The expansion team Golden State Valkyries earned a respectable 'B' for their debut performances, with rookies like Janelle Salaun making significant contributions.

Underperformers and Unexpected Challenges

Not all teams have started the season on a high note. The Las Vegas Aces, a perennial powerhouse, surprisingly received a 'D+' grade, struggling to find their rhythm after a dominant run in previous years. Similarly, the Connecticut Sun earned a 'D' due to inconsistent play and difficulty adapting to new strategies. At the bottom of the pack, the Chicago Sky and Dallas Wings both received 'F' grades, grappling with significant roster issues and poor on-court results.

The Indiana Fever, led by Caitlin Clark in her second season, managed a 'C+' grade. While Clark continues to draw attention, the team has faced challenges in translating individual talent into cohesive wins. The Los Angeles Sparks, with a 'C-' grade, are also searching for answers as they work to rebuild their identity.

Key Questions and Future Outlook

As the season progresses, several questions remain unanswered for each team. Will the Liberty and Lynx maintain their dominance en route to a potential Finals rematch? Can underperforming teams like the Aces and Sun turn things around before the playoffs, which are set to begin on September 11? The expanded Finals format, now a best-of-seven series, adds another layer of intrigue to the postseason.

For newer teams like the Valkyries, the focus will be on building momentum with young talent. Posts found on X highlight the impact of rookies across the league, with players like Sonia Citron and Kiki Iriafen of the Washington Mystics also earning praise alongside Salaun. With the WNBA Commissioner's Cup running through July 1 and the All-Star Game scheduled for July 19 at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, there are plenty of opportunities for teams to redefine their trajectories.
