US Army Pacific Commander Highlights Challenges to Chinese Invasion of Taiwan

Strategic Deterrence in the Indo-Pacific

In a recent strategic discussion, Army Gen. Ronald P. Clark, the commander of U.S. Army Pacific, emphasized the increasing difficulties China would face in attempting an invasion of Taiwan. Speaking at a forum hosted by the Center for Strategic and International Studies on June 27, Gen. Clark highlighted the complexities of a large-scale military operation across the Taiwan Strait. He noted that the U.S. military, alongside allies and partners, is actively working to ensure that any such operation remains a significant challenge for Beijing.

Gen. Clark specifically pointed out the logistical hurdles of a 'wet gap crossing' over the roughly 80 nautical miles of contested space between mainland China and Taiwan. 'The chance of being able to conduct an uncontested or successful wet gap crossing of that scale is very, very small,' he stated, underscoring the daunting nature of such an endeavor against prepared defenses. This assessment comes as part of broader U.S. efforts to bolster deterrence in the region through enhanced military readiness and partnerships.

China's Rapid Military Advancements

During his remarks, Gen. Clark also addressed the unprecedented pace of China's military modernization. He described how China is developing its technologies, capabilities, and operational procedures at a scale never before seen, posing new challenges to regional stability. This rapid advancement has heightened concerns among U.S. military leaders about Beijing's intentions and actions in the Indo-Pacific, particularly around Taiwan.

Gen. Clark noted that China's frequent military exercises, including simulations of blockades and potential cross-strait invasions, provide valuable insights into their strategies. 'It gives us an opportunity to really understand how they would go about something like a blockade or potentially a cross-strait invasion, which as we all know is exceptionally difficult,' he said. These observations are critical for the U.S. Army Pacific as it refines its own strategies to counter such moves and support joint forces in the region.

Strengthening Alliances for Regional Security

Beyond addressing China's capabilities, Gen. Clark emphasized the importance of alliances in maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific. He highlighted his close coordination with U.S. Forces Korea commander Gen. Xavier Brunson, describing their near-daily communication as vital to readiness on the Korean Peninsula and beyond. This partnership exemplifies the ironclad commitment of U.S. forces to deter aggression through collaborative efforts.

The U.S. Army Pacific continues to train alongside allies to enhance lethality and survivability, ensuring that forces are prepared for any contingency. Gen. Clark's focus on providing deterrent options underscores a dedication to safeguarding American interests and supporting regional partners. For U.S. service members stationed in this critical theater, their readiness reflects a profound commitment to national security and the values of freedom they defend with honor.
