UK Police Crack Down on Protests for Banned Palestine Action Group

Mass Arrests Follow Ban on Palestine Action

On July 12, UK police arrested dozens of activists across the country during protests supporting Palestine Action, a pro-Palestinian group recently banned under terrorism legislation. The London Metropolitan Police Service had issued a warning on July 11 about multiple planned events over the weekend, stating that showing support for a proscribed organization is a criminal offense. By the afternoon of July 12, the police confirmed 41 arrests in London alone for this offense, with an additional arrest for common assault.

Reports indicate that the crackdown extended beyond London, with activist group Defend Our Juries claiming dozens more arrests in cities like Manchester, Cardiff, and areas in Scotland during similar protest events. Since the ban on Palestine Action was enacted on July 4, over 110 individuals have been detained nationwide for supporting the group, reflecting the scale of enforcement following the parliamentary decision to label it a terrorist organization.

The decision to proscribe Palestine Action came after incidents involving members of the group, including a notable event where activists broke into an RAF base and damaged planes as a protest against Britain's support for Israel. Lawmakers moved to ban the group, and on July 5, Palestine Action lost an urgent appeal against this designation. This legal status means that any expression of support, including attending rallies or displaying symbols associated with the group, can lead to arrest under the Terrorism Act.

Among those arrested was an 83-year-old retired priest, Reverend Sue Parfitt, detained during a demonstration in support of the banned group. The Metropolitan Police have defended their actions, emphasizing that the law applies uniformly regardless of age or background. This incident has drawn attention to the broad application of the new legislation and raised questions about the balance between security measures and the right to protest.

Public Response and Ongoing Tensions

The arrests have sparked varied reactions, with some posts on social media platforms like X reflecting frustration over the protests, while others highlight concerns about police tactics and perceived harassment during demonstrations. One protester, speaking anonymously after being arrested, stated, 'We oppose genocideโ€”I didn't think that was that controversialโ€”and we support the people who resist genocide,' capturing a sentiment of defiance among some activists.

As protests continue, police have reported additional measures such as mass body searches at demonstrations, which some claim are intended to intimidate participants. With over 70 arrests reported in the second week of solidarity actions, tensions remain high between authorities enforcing the ban and activists challenging what they see as an infringement on their right to express dissent.
