Tyriq Withers Shines as Cameron Cade in Jordan Peele's Horror Film 'HIM'

From FSU Walk-On to Hollywood Star

Tyriq Withers, a former wide receiver for the Florida State Seminoles, has made a remarkable transition from the football field to the silver screen. As a walk-on at FSU in 2016, Withers faced the challenges of earning his place on the team without a scholarship, an experience that shaped his resilience and determination. Now, he stars as Cameron Cade in the new horror-thriller 'HIM,' a film produced by acclaimed filmmaker Jordan Peele and directed by Justin Tipping, which premiered on September 19.

Withers drew heavily from his time at FSU to bring authenticity to his role as a young football player with big dreams. He has spoken about how his interactions with teammates like Dalvin Cook, Brian Burns, and Cam Akers provided inspiration for his character. 'I watched how Dalvin carried himself, his work ethic, and how he led the team,' Withers said, reflecting on the lessons he applied to his portrayal of Cade.

The Dark Side of Football in 'HIM'

'HIM' is not just a horror film but a deep dive into the psychological and physical toll of professional sports, particularly football. Directed by Justin Tipping, who hails from El Cerrito, California, the movie explores themes of ambition, sacrifice, and the darker underbelly of athletic greatness. Tipping has noted, 'Body horror is inherent in the game,' highlighting how the sport's brutality blends seamlessly with the film's terrifying narrative.

In the movie, Withers' character, Cameron Cade, trains at a mysterious desert compound owned by a retiring football icon, Isaiah White, played by Marlon Wayans. The story takes a sinister turn as Cade uncovers unsettling truths about the cost of success. Produced by Jordan Peele, known for his genre-defining horror films, 'HIM' combines sports drama with psychological terror, offering a unique cinematic experience.

Tipping credits Peele's support for bringing this project to life, emphasizing how the producer's vision helped shape the film's bold approach. The result is a 96-minute thrill ride that challenges viewers to rethink the culture surrounding America's favorite sport.

A New Chapter for Tyriq Withers

Withers' journey to Hollywood also involved working with quarterback guru Jordan Palmer, whose training helped him refine the physicality needed for his role. 'Working with Jordan Palmer gave me insights into what it takes to be at the top level,' Withers shared, noting how those lessons translated into his performance as a promising athlete in 'HIM.'

As reviews pour in, critics have praised Withers for bringing depth to Cameron Cade, with some noting the authenticity he brings from his real-life football background. His performance alongside seasoned actor Marlon Wayans has garnered attention, marking him as a talent to watch. For FSU fans, Withers remains a proud alumnus, recently expressing hope for a national championship, saying, 'We're having a great year. Shout out to the 'Noles. I would like to see a natty this year.'
