LA Mayor Karen Bass Backs Antonio Villaraigosa in 2026 Governor Race

A Historic Endorsement in Los Angeles

On September 9, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass made a significant political move by endorsing former Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa for the 2026 California governor's race. Speaking at a news conference in the Crenshaw District outside the headquarters of the Los Angeles Sentinel newspaper, Bass highlighted their decades-long partnership and shared commitment to community issues. She described Villaraigosa as 'my brother from another mother,' emphasizing their deep personal and professional connection that dates back to their early activism in South and East L.A.

Bass praised Villaraigosa's track record, noting his contributions as Assembly speaker to create healthcare coverage for children before Obamacare, as well as his focus on public transportation and environmental issues during his tenure as mayor from 2005 to 2013. 'I know as California's next governor, you are talking about someone who knows the legislature, who knows the legislative process, who knows how to build relationships, who knows our city,' Bass stated, underscoring his readiness to lead the state during uncertain times at the national level.

Villaraigosa's Political Journey and Current Standing

Antonio Villaraigosa, a 72-year-old Los Angeles native, is no stranger to California politics. As the city's first Latino mayor, he served two terms and previously held a position as state assemblyman. This endorsement comes as he makes his second bid for governor, having lost in the 2018 primary among a crowded field of 26 candidates. Despite his experience, recent polls indicate that Villaraigosa is trailing behind other contenders, with former Democratic Representative Katie Porter currently leading the pack.

Villaraigosa expressed gratitude for Bass's support, stating, 'I’m honored to have Bass’s support, a fierce advocate for working families, children, seniors, and underserved communities and a tireless champion for social and economic justice and for the people of Los Angeles.' His campaign has already released its first television ad, signaling an active push to gain traction among voters ahead of the 2026 election to succeed Governor Gavin Newsom.

Implications for California's Future

The endorsement from Bass, the first Black female mayor of Los Angeles, carries symbolic weight as it unites two historic figures in the city's political landscape. Their shared history of coalition-building, as Bass noted during the press conference, could resonate with voters seeking unity and progress on critical issues like education, housing affordability, public safety, and job opportunities. 'We have always believed that the way you bring about change is you do it together,' Bass remarked, reflecting on their joint efforts over the years.

As California faces an uncertain political climate with potential shifts in national leadership, Bass emphasized the need for a governor with proven experience and a deep understanding of the state's diverse needs. Villaraigosa's long-standing ties to Los Angeles and his legislative background position him as a candidate who could bridge local and statewide priorities, though he will need to overcome current polling deficits to secure the Democratic nomination and ultimately the governorship.
