Hockey Diversity Alliance at 5: A Milestone in Changing the Game

<

From Group Chat to Grassroots Movement

The Hockey Diversity Alliance (HDA) marked its fifth anniversary on August 16, celebrating a journey that began as a simple group chat among players in 2020. Founded by NHL players of color, including Akim Aliu and Evander Kane, the organization emerged in the wake of global calls for racial justice, aiming to eradicate systemic racism and intolerance in hockey. What started as a conversation has grown into a powerful force, focusing on expanding access to the sport for underserved communities.

The HDA's mission, as stated on their official website, is to 'inspire a new and diverse generation of hockey players and fans.' Their efforts have centered on creating opportunities for minority youth to engage with the sport, breaking down barriers that have historically limited participation. A recent event, the HDA Summer Fest 2025 held in Toronto, drew 2,200 attendees from diverse backgrounds, offering them a chance to meet NHL stars and sports figures, showcasing the organization's growing impact.

Challenges and Triumphs Along the Way

Despite its successes, the HDA has faced significant challenges, including tensions with the National Hockey League (NHL). In 2023, Akim Aliu and other HDA members expressed feelings of betrayal when the NHL launched an inclusion coalition without their involvement. Aliu has been vocal about the league's lack of support, stating, 'In three short years, history has already proven who is doing the real work and who is on the right side of it.'

On the triumph side, the HDA has made strides with grassroots initiatives like their youth hockey program, which debuted successfully in the Toronto area and has since expanded. Wayne Simmonds, a key figure in the alliance, emphasized the personal impact of their work, saying, 'We want to be the driving force of change, so that no minority child has to go through what so many of us have.' These programs provide not just equipment but also confidence and opportunity for young players.

The organization's ability to host large-scale events like the Summer Fest underlines their growing influence. Posts found on X highlight the community's enthusiasm for these initiatives, with many praising the HDA for bringing people together to break barriers in hockey.

Looking Ahead: Expanding Access and Inclusion

As the HDA looks to the future, their focus remains on expanding their reach and deepening their impact. Plans to grow youth programs across more regions are underway, building on the success of initial efforts in Toronto. The alliance continues to call for donations to support their mission, with campaigns urging supporters to help 'buy skates and sticks' while giving kids 'a place to shine.'

The HDA also seeks to strengthen ties within the hockey community, encouraging current and former players to join their cause. With ongoing events and a clear vision articulated by leaders like Nazem Kadri, who recently celebrated 700 NHL career points, the alliance aims to ensure that hockey becomes a truly inclusive sport for all. Their commitment to change remains unwavering as they build on five years of hard-fought progress.
