The Historic Sports Car Club recently hosted a spectacular event at Cadwell Park to mark the 50th anniversary of Formula Ford 2000 during the Wolds Trophy last weekend. An impressive grid of 40 cars took to the track, engaging in thrilling qualification races and two finals that captivated motorsport enthusiasts. This event is just the beginning of a year-long celebration of the formula's golden anniversary, highlighting its enduring legacy in the racing world.
The Historic FF2000 championship, under the banner of the Historic Sports Car Club, will continue to honor this milestone throughout the year. Drivers are competing for the Ian Taylor Trophy, named in memory of the Berkshire-based racer who clinched the first-ever FF2000 race in a Dulon MP16 at Mallory Park in March 1975. The series has a rich history of nurturing talent and providing a competitive platform for racers.
Legacy and Future of Formula Ford 2000
Formula Ford 2000 was originally introduced by motorsport business visionary John Webb of Motor Circuit Developments as a stepping stone for drivers transitioning to slicks and wings. It offered an affordable alternative to the more expensive Formula 3, allowing racers to hone their skills at a competitive level. The cars, built with purpose-designed spaceframe chassis and powered by the accessible Ford Pinto engine, were produced by various manufacturers, contributing to the diversity and appeal of the series.
The Historic FF2000 championship, a core part of the Historic Sports Car Club since its formation in 2007, plans to build on 18 successful years with a robust 2025 calendar. Upcoming double-header events are scheduled at iconic circuits like Snetterton, Donington Park, Brands Hatch Grand Prix, and the Silverstone Finals. Leadership transitions within the championship also mark this celebratory year, with long-time series chair Alan Morgan stepping down.
