A severe outbreak of Legionnaires' disease has hit London, Ontario, leaving one person dead and over 40 others infected. The Middlesex-London Health Unit declared the outbreak on July 8, noting that 43 cases have been reported in the city this year, with 35 of those occurring in just the past week. Dr. Joanne Kearon, the health unit's associate medical officer of health, noted that the outbreak area overlaps with a similar zone investigated during last summer's outbreak, suggesting a potential recurring environmental factor.
'I know that is what most people are anxious to understand, is where it is coming from, and so are we. Unfortunately, we don't yet have a location,' Dr. Kearon stated, highlighting the complexity of tracing the bacteria. The health unit has also issued reminders to healthcare providers to consider Legionellosis when diagnosing patients with lower respiratory symptoms, aiming to catch cases early.
The sharp increase in recent cases points to a larger environmental source, according to health officials. Most individuals diagnosed in this outbreak have required hospitalization, underscoring the severity of the illness and the urgent need for answers.
